Questions (#61): Wednesday, September 10, 2008

1) American Idol has produced a number of successful performers, especially in the country music genre. In 2007, she earned the 2007 “Single of the Year” by the Country Music Association. Who is she and what was the song? (Hint: she’s blond...couldn’t resist).
(5 points each) 10

2) It’s the second single from the 1997 album Secrets and widely considered to be this artist’s signature song. It was written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster and became this artist’s second consecutive Number #1 song. Name the artist and song. (Hint: she’s not blond).

3) In 2006, online voters rated the song Number #1 on VH1’s “The 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s.” It spent 4 weeks at number #1 between February – March 1987. Name the artist and song.
(5 points each) 30

4) This song, released in 1977, became this artist’s first single from his debut album, Flowing Rivers, and went straight to Number #1, as did his next two songs. It was co-written by his brother, who is the only writer credited. Name the artist and song. (Hint: Jason Castro of American Idol Season #7 covered this song on the show for the 70s themed week – my knowledge of AI ranks second only to the Queen’s, Beckeye).
(5 points each) 40

5) This song was this group’s only Number #1 song in 1967. It stayed there for 3 weeks and knocked the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” out of the top spot. It’s a common song that has been featured in many, many movies and in 2007, the song was sampled on Britney Spears’ “Ooh Ooh Baby” from her Blackout album. Name the artist and song.
(5 points each) 50

6) And speaking of the Beatles, this song was recorded in 1968 by Paul McCartney (though it was credited to Lennon/McCartney) to comfort Lennon’s son, Julian, during his parent’s divorce. Name the song.
(10 points) 60

7) This song had a rather sexy title (until you realized who sang it) and it made the pop charts as a major hit in 1978. But proving that the group had little talent, they became country artists for the rest of their career. Name the song and artist.
(5 points each) 70

8) This was this band’s on Number #1 single and it was from their 1987 album Kick. Name the song and the artist.
(5 points each) 80

9) This song was written by this Canadian country artist and her husband as well as being produced by her husband. It went to Number #2 on the charts in 1998 and was nominated for 4 Grammy awards in 1999, winning 2. Name the song and artist.
(5 points each) 90

10) They had a hit with “Snow (Hey Oh)” in 2007. Who are they?

1) Carrie Underwood, "Before He Cheats"

2) Diane Warren's written so much crap, I have no idea.

3) Bon Jovi, "Livin' on a Prayer" (And I couldn't really argue with it, although it's not my #1 of the '80s.)

4) Ahhh, little Jason. That was Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything."

5) ?

6) "Hey Jude"

7) Wait a minute now! You're saying that no country artists have talent?? *buzz* Wrong answer. I'm not sure about the song...was it "Kiss You All Over" by Exile? (The song Michael Johns SHOULD HAVE sung during '70s week!)

8) "Need You Tonight," INXS

9) "You're Still the One," Shania Twain

10) Mr. Plow and the Shit Shovelers

great job beck (especially on number #10). regarding the country music comment, i was basically tweaking everyone. there are some talented country types, but let's face it - when you are at the end of your career, you do a talk show (Carnie Wilson, Donny & Marie), perform on Dancing with the Stars (Marie) or go country (Kim Carnes - who couldn't buy a hit after Bette Davis Eyes, Bellamy Brothers, Exile, Jessica Simpson and numerous others...)
