on number 10, perhaps i was not specific enough and perhaps my clue was misleading. Carpenter started out as a drummer for their group, which consisted of her brother Richard and several sessions players when they toured. when i first saw them in concert in 1971, she WAS the drummer, but they weren't THAT well known. but by the time i saw them in 1973, they were internationally famous and she was totally out front performing her vocals.
you may not have recognized the Carpenters as a group but more as a duo and if so, discount the question.
thank you,
Editor
Editor, I won't discount the question because it's right, it's just not the only answer. I almost put Karen Carpenter is parenthesis because she had started out a the drummer. But at the time they were an instrumental group. I thought you meant someone who was a drummer in a group that already had a singer. Kind of like when Teddy Pendergrass was the drummer for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and ended up as the lead singer. The same happened with Jeffrey Osborne (LTD) and of course Larry Blackman (Cameo)
Oh Yeah Editor,
There is a nice write up on Gino Vanelli at http://thebluesblogger.com/
